What do kids get from the martial arts?
Each martial art focuses on different skills. Some focus on grappling, others focus on striking, some on kicking, and still others on meditation. Despite the apparent focus on any given skill, every martial art will teach its students a core set of skills. Physical fitness, self-discipline, and self-confidence all are examples of those skills.
Physical Fitness
From the moment they begin class to the minute they end, kids are moving. Whether it’s kicking, punching, running, flipping someone or doing pushups, children are always active. In addition to the workout, children learn how to use their bodies in different ways. Many classes also include a warm up and cool down during class, so kids are sure to get a great workout while they’re learning how their moves.
Self-Discipline
Unfortunately we cannot simply plug ourselves in and download a martial art. It requires practice. And more practice, and more practice. Students learn those skills through repetition in class, and eventually will begin to practice on their own. Once a student has learned to apply discipline to training at home, they can also apply it to other things, such as schoolwork or household chores. This transition is what makes Martial Arts training so valuable. Not only does their training help in their martial arts class, but in all areas of their life.
Self-Confidence
Some people are born with boundless self-confidence. The rest of us, need to develop it. No one is born knowing how to do a jump spin back kick, but over time people certainly learn how. The confidence a child learns while developing their physical skills applies to other aspects of their life. Self-confidence stays with children forever. A martial arts class will show children that they CAN do seemingly impossible things, and that they can succeed anywhere they choose to.
The martial arts have many things to offer people of all ages, especially children. From learning how to throw someone, to running really fast, to knowing that they CAN do something, martial arts can be a very positive force in your child’s life. The only thing you need to do to get them started on this amazing journey is to try a class or two at your local martial arts school. Trust me, your child will thank you.
